How Can Coffee and CBD Work Together?

Jan 16, 2023Thomas K

6 out of 10 Americans drink at least one cup of coffee a day. Most likely you are one of them. In recent years combining CBD and coffee has become a new trend, but why? Does CBD and caffeine boost your overall focus and ability to make things happen? CBD have been studied to keep your body functioning at its best while allowing caffeine to do its job without the negative side effects.  We dive into that finding and more in this OG blog post: How CBD & Coffee can work together.

What Happens When CBD & Caffeine Are Combined?

There have been recent studies that suggest that when CBD is combined with caffeine the synergetic effects are significant. To begin we first must understand what caffeine is and what power it has on the body. Caffeine has been shown to increase productivity in an individual by raising the concentration and alertness of a person.  In addition, studies have suggested that caffeine even helps adrenaline and cortisol flow throughout the body. With the increase of circulation of these chemicals, the mind becomes more focused and alert.

It is important to note that with caffeine the negative byproducts of a such increase of focus are the below:

  • Anxiousness
  • Jitteriness
  • Sweating
  • Nauseousness

In turn when a person has the above side effects, it becomes close to impossible to remain focused and productive. When CBD is introduced into the mix, then the non-intoxicating cannabinoid interacts with your endocannabinoid system (ECS) and counter acts those few adverse effects that caffeine has on you.

How Is Productivity When You Combine CBD & Coffee?

As mentioned above: caffeine can have adverse effects on you such as:  Anxiety, sweating, increased heart rate, etc, but combing CBD with you daily routine of caffeine intake can put down those effects. When CBD binds to your ECS, that in turn will increase the natural processes your body does. According to the Harvard Health Journal: The ECS comprises a vast network of chemical signals and cellular receptors that are densely packed throughout our brains and bodies. The "cannabinoid" receptors in the brain — the CB1 receptors — outnumber many of the other receptor types on the brain. They act like traffic cops to control the levels and activity of most of the other neurotransmitters. This is how they regulate things: by immediate feedback, turning up or down the activity of whichever system needs to be adjusted, whether that is hunger, temperature, or alertness.

CBD & Coffee Benefits: May Increase Mental Alertness

There is evidence to suggest that CBD may amplify caffeine's alertness-boosting effects, since they both interact with the same neurotransmitters: adenosine neurotransmitters are one example.

There has been evidence that shows CBD can increase alertness and boosting what caffeine creates because both work with the same neurotransmitters. One of the neurotransmitters that both caffeine and CBD interact with are the Adenosine neurotransmitters. When our body produces adenosine, it alerts are body to slow down and get ready for a good night’s sleep. When caffeine enters the blood stream it begins to bind with the adenosine receptors, which in turn prevent the body from going to sleep. The main reason why people drink coffee to begin with is to stay up and stay alert. When CBD interacts with the adenosine receptors, it modifies their functionality. CBD have been studied to keep your body functioning at its best while allowing caffeine to do its job without the negative side effects.

In addition, another study has shown that CBD interacts with serotonin receptors that in turn increase the serotonin itself. Once serotonin is increased, a greater sense of motivation and well-being is created.

CBD Can Combat the Negative Effects of Caffeine

CBD has been known to combat anxiety, symptoms of depression and Post Traumatic Stress, as per The National Health Institute. CBD has been known to benefit the below:

The above positive effects of CBD can in turn combat the anxiousness that caffeine can produce if you take to much.

Methods of Using CBD With Coffee

There are a few ways you can incorporate CBD with your daily coffee intact.

Oil Tinctures

We do not recommend dropping the CBD oil directly into your hot coffee as the high temperature will weaken the effects CBD. We suggest taking a dose of CBD after your sip your coffee.  This way both the caffeine and CBD both can do their jobs.

Another thing worth mentioning is if you do apply CBD into the coffee directly, maybe iced coffee, the CBD will rise to the surface.  The best method to squirt your appropriate amount of CBD under your tongue, wait 30 seconds, and swallow.

CBD Gummies

Although we do not have CBD Gummies (yet), taking CBD gummies after your coffee is a great way to introduce CBD into your body! Be sure to subscribe to our newsletter follow us on Instagram to know when we drop them!
