USMC Combat Engineer
As a Marine Corps Combat Engineer, Mike faced the challenges of deployment with courage and grit.
During his service in Afghanistan, he encountered the harsh realities of war. On December 10th, 2010, Mike was blown up while sweeping for IEDs on foot patrol.
During the explosion, massive amounts of shrapnel his lower back, hamstrings, and glutes, as well as my left forearm, which was later amputated.
Despite this life-altering injury, Mike's commitment to his fellow Marines remained unwavering.
The Future
Following his medical retirement from the Marine Corps, Michael encountered diffcult times, including the loss of fellow Marines and adapting to his new "normal".
Amidst the darkness, he found purpose in snowboarding, eventually setting his sights on competing in the Paralympics.
Michael not only achieved his goal of making the Team USA but also found his wife Kris Spivey and happiness in his personal life.
His journey serves as an inspiration to us all, reminding us that even in the face of adversity, we keep moving forward.
