CBD vs Melatonin

CBD vs Melatonin

Oct 18, 2022Thomas K

Many have been introduced to melatonin as the prime “Go To” to accomplish amazing sleep. Some people swear it by it.

In recent years, thousands of people have turned to CBD which provides the similar benefits that melatonin delivers.

Which is better?

Are they the same in terms of desired effect?

Can they work together?

We will break these questions down and more below.

What is Melatonin?

Melatonin

First, we must define what melatonin is. As The National Institute of Health defines it:

“Melatonin is a hormone that your brain produces in response to darkness. It helps with the timing of your circadian rhythms (24-hour internal clock) and with sleep. Being exposed to light at night can block melatonin production.”

Research suggests that melatonin plays other important roles in the body beyond sleep. However, these effects are yet to be fully understood by the medical and scientific community.

Melatonin dietary supplements can be made from animals or micro-organisms, but most often they’re made synthetically. The main four areas that melatonin aims to address are:

  • Jet Lag
  • Delayed Sleep-Wake phase disorder (“DSWPD”)
  • Some sleep disorders in children
  • Anxiety before and after surgery

What Is CBD?

CBD, or cannabidiol, is a compound found primarily in the flowers and leaves of the hemp plant. It’s one of many powerful cannabinoids found in hemp, and is known for supporting body and mind in various ways.*

Does CBD Support Sleep?

Sleep and CBD

In recent study’s released on Medical News Today, researchers have concluded that around 160mg of CBD, users were able to increase sleep duration. Our CBD Oil products can support this application given our potency per bottle.

Another point worth mentioning is that levels of cortisol, which is the stress hormone in your body, is highest in the morning. Cortisol levels are even higher if an individual is found to be diagnosed with insomnia. In another study that the researchers conducted, they determined that users can significantly decrease cortisol levels in “high” doses of CBD.

We always recommend our clients to start with small doses and work their way up to where they feel the optimal effect. The objective is to find your “golden dose” and adjust accordingly. Everyone is unique, so don’t think what works for someone else, will work for you exactly.

Which Should I Take for Sleep? CBD or Melatonin?

The answer to these questions all depends on you and what sleep issues you are experiencing. If you are dealing with anxiety, constant stress, ruminating thoughts etc…CBD would benefit you the best.

On the other hand, melatonin will better support those who need a reset of their “sleep clock”, i.e. from Jet Lag. At the end of the day, you must do what supports you and your lifestyle
